Our Story
My second studio album isn't just a release; it's a 25-year dream actualized. This project features original compositions by my Guru, Saraswathi Subramanian, in the Carnatic music style, deeply rooted in the profound poetry of the great Tamil poet, Subramania Bharathiyar. What makes this album truly unique is a groundbreaking collaboration: I've teamed up with a brilliant jazz pianist, Charu Suri, to forge an unprecedented fusion, aiming to transcend traditional boundaries. The album also features Shreya Devnath, an award-winning violinist deeply rooted in the Carnatic tradition, contributing with her versatile tone. The album is a dedication to my Guru's efforts in grooming many musicians like me and inspiring them to create.
The songs - each with a different feel and multiple Raga-based compositions - blend the intricate melodic structures of Carnatic music with the improvisational freedom of jazz, intertwining with Barathiyar’s powerful poetry, creating a sound that is both authentic and universally appealing.

In the opening song ‘Baratha Desam’, Barathiyar pens a vivid and proud tribute to India as a land of rich heritage, natural beauty, and a unified spirit, inspiring a vision of a glorious, self-reliant nation.

In the final track ‘Veera Sudandiram’, Barathiyar makes a fiery, defiant declaration that true freedom is not a gift to be begged for, but a fierce right to be seized by a brave and united people.

His mastery of words is very evident in ‘Chandiran Oliyil’ - a romantic poem that uses the serene moonlight as a backdrop for playful conversation and expressions of love, celebrating the pure and joyful connection between two hearts.

‘Payum Oli’ is a rapturous ode to the divine, where the poet sees their beloved as the very essence of all life's beauty—the light, the music, the joy, and the strength within every moment.
The use of a multi-raga format in each song effectively conveys the poet's mood, with each raga thoughtfully chosen to amplify the emotion within the poetry.

My mission has always been to introduce Carnatic music to a broader global audience, and an album like this is perfectly poised to significantly widen the listener base for this ancient art form. It offers a fresh, accessible entry point for new listeners while retaining the depth that connoisseurs cherish.
